GRODATX® — for water based paints
The multifunctional ammonia replacement for water-based emulsion coatings. GRODATX® regulates and buffers pH long-term, works as a co-dispersant, cuts formulation costs, and is approved for Green Seal certified paints — a direct answer for formulators who need low-odor, high-performance emulsion paints without ammonia.
Why replace Ammonia in water-based paints?
Liquor ammonia boils at just 28–29 °C. It evaporates from the paint bucket during storage and application, dragging pH toward the acidic range and destabilizing viscosity and biocide performance. For modern low-odor and eco-friendly paint lines, it is also a growing liability. Here is what formulators leave behind when they remove ammonia:
- pH drift and reduced emulsion paint stability — ammonia escapes the can, your pH buffer disappears with it
- Strong pungent vapors that block low-odor, eco-friendly paint positioning and hurt market acceptance
- Serious workplace exposure: severe eye, skin and respiratory hazards during handling and production
- Zero multifunctionality — ammonia gives only short-term pH control, with no formulation or performance benefit
A Multifunctional pH Buffer That Improves Paint Quality
With an active-material boiling point of 172 °C, GRODATX® stays in the paint bucket during storage and application, delivering a stable, long-term pH buffer instead of a fading one. Added directly to the grind, it also acts as a co-dispersant — letting you optimize the dosage of wetting, dispersing and coalescing agents that would otherwise remain in the dried film and detract from paint performance.
- Reduce dispersing agent by up to 25%
- Reduce wetting agent by up to 25%
- Reduce coalescing agent by up to 10%
- Better water and scrub resistance, gloss and shade strength
- Complete ammonia replacement — approved for Green Seal certified paints
A direct 1:1 drop-in replacement for AMP-95 and Advantex
GRODATX® can be applied to every water-based emulsion coating and substitutes AMP-95, AMP-75, Synergex, Advantex and similar specialty amino-alcohol additives on a 1:1 basis — no reformulation, no process changes, and a clear price advantage over imported pH neutralizers. Beyond emulsion paints, adding GRODATX® as a neutralizing agent for alkyds enables water emulsification in solvent-borne systems, drastically reducing VOC content to meet the strictest environmental standards while lowering raw-material cost.
- 1:1 substitution — same dosage, same process
- Price advantage vs. imported additives
- VOC reduction in solvent-borne alkyd systems
Lab-Proven Performance in Interior and Exterior Emulsion Paints
Independent laboratory evaluations in mid-tier interior and exterior emulsion paints compared standard ammonia formulations against GRODATX® and a GRODATX®-optimized formulation. The optimized version delivered higher scrub resistance (up to 1,660 cycles interior / 2,610 cycles exterior), freeze-thaw stability across 5 cycles with no separation or coagulation, a steady pH of 7–8 for 7 days — including at 50 °C — and tinting strength and shade development fully at par, with no extra tinter needed.
